Getting Over It

Cranky, cranky, cranky. That might not actually be enough crankies to describe how I've been feeling for the first two days back at school. I'm really good at coming up with excuses for why this might be but it doesn't really matter. What matters is that I need to get over it.

This is my resolution: focusing on the positive. I got my class list today with sixteen new little first graders. They're what matters. Focusing on the positive isn't that hard when I think about them.

My goal is to write here (and on twitter) positively. I don't expect that to be 100% possible, but it is a good goal.

Sorry that you are feeling cranky. I did notice something for you to feel positive about in your post though - 16 first graders. I have 25 and I am feeling good about that because last year I had 29 but ended up with 28. I can't even imagine what life would be like with 16 students - I really can't imagine it. There you go - a positive note for you.

Jill, 16 is wonderful! Our administrators are fabulous about keeping our numbers low and I've typically had about 20 first graders. I expect to gain a few - we always have plenty of last minute registrations - but I am very grateful for my small class size. I can't imagine 28!

Well, I mentioned this to a co-worker today and she reminded me that all of of our children speak English, have breakfast everyday, have books in their homes, etc. In the beginning of my career, I worked in a district where this wasn't true. Now I work in a very well off district. I needed to be reminded about how well off I am, too.
